: : : James,

: : : Is the greenhouse effect equivalent to the atmosphere, or are they different things?

: : The greenhouse effect is caused by the presence
: : of the atmosphere. If there were no atmosphere,
: : there would be no greenhouse effect. The only
: : way to have an atmosphere and no greehouse effect
: : is if the atmosphere contained only gases that
: : were completely transparent (no absorbing) to
: : longwave radiation in the emission region of the
: : planet. So, they are not formally equivalent,
: : but the presence of an atmosphere usually implies
: : that the planet will have at least some greenhouse
: : effect.

: I don't like greenhouses

I would love to know whether there is a greenhouse effect
caused by humans or not.
Does it get warmer just because of us burning oil, gas
and coals or would it get warmer anyway because of the
sun or whatever???
